It was a new era and American Lutheranism faced the same spirit of change that affected all of the early 20th-century society. Turmoil was common in both large and small Lutheran church bodies. At the Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, three professors spoke with one voice for conservative Midwestern Lutherans. J.P. Koehler, August Pieper, and John Schaller led the small Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) during the first 30 years of this century with their refreshing, exegetical theology.
The book The Wauwatosa Theology-Volume 1 is a comprehensive offering of these theologians' writings. It includes 50 essays translated into English, many of which were previously unpublished, and an introductory 80-page essay by Martin O. Westerhaus. The Wauwatosa Theology is a valuable primary source for those who study American Lutheranism at its watershed.
